美國海軍去年在聖尼古拉斯島附近的太平洋海域成功試射了名為「海洋激光示範者」的激光炮。他們利用一台安裝在甲板上的激光炮，向移動中的無人駕駛小船發射「激光彈」。小船「中炮」起火，其後被火焰吞噬。這是美軍首次從戰艦等移動平台發射激光炮，標誌着美軍具備了整合激光系統與戰艦雷達及導航系統的能力。西方媒體稱，這次試驗是「星球大戰的海上版本」。
激光武器是利用沿一定方向發射的激光束直接攻擊目標的特種武器，屬定向能武器的一種。顧名思義，艦載激光武器是裝載在戰艦上的。
激光速度每秒達30萬公里，用激光射擊飛機、導彈、坦克等活動目標，就像用手電筒照射物體那樣，操作簡便。而且，它不受電磁干擾，發射時幾乎沒有後坐力，易於迅速變換發射方向，能在短時間內射殺多個目標。
與現行的艦炮不同，激光炮可將能量聚焦於很細的激光束，精確地擊中目標甚至目標的脆弱部位。它還可以依靠預警雷達測定敵方導彈或飛機飛行的方位、距離、高度、速度等，經過電腦運算後，準確無誤地命中目標。
如果敵方同時發射多枚真假導彈，激光炮完全有能力在短時間內將所有來襲導彈全部摧毀。1975年，前蘇聯用陸基激光武器擊毀了兩顆美國的軍事偵察衛星，開創了激光炮打衛星的新紀元。
按作戰使用，激光武器有戰略激光武器和戰術激光武器之分。戰略激光武器可用於反衛星和反戰略導彈。戰術激光武器包括「硬殺傷」激光武器和「軟殺傷」激光武器兩種。前者是利用強激光束破壞目標；後者所需能量較低，主要用於燒傷人眼或破壞武器的電子設備和光電傳感器，又稱為激光致盲武器或激光反傳感器武器。
按照搭載平台分，激光武器有陸基、海基、空基和天基武器，搭載於水面艦艇的激光武器，就是前文中提到過的激光炮。與陸基激光武器不同，艦載激光武器易受水面艦艇容積限制，艦艇儲存超強度電流的能力也有限，發射頻次較低。受海洋環境和艦艇平台不穩定性的影響，艦載激光炮還需要借助雷達及導航系統對其射擊目標進行即時校正。
波音公司去年接到美國海軍的命令，完成100 千瓦「自由電子激光武器系統」試驗型號。波音戰略導彈及防務系統公司負責人格雷格．亨利斯勞普稱，這種高速、高精度、大功率的激光武器將使美國海軍戰艦具備應對新興威脅的能力。
此外，美國海軍還在與雷神公司合作研發「激光近距離武器系統」，該系統可發射功率為50 千瓦的激光束，既可安裝在軍艦內部，又可車載使用。據稱，這款激光武器，已於去年5 月在加利福尼亞州附近距洛杉磯市不足170 公里的海域實施秘密試射。
有專家分析，美國此項技術的成功可有效抑止核武器的威脅，但也會引起各國競相仿效。
